Codex Pets is a moderated community registry for downloadable Codex pet packs. Each approved pet has a public detail page, a package ZIP, pet.json metadata, a spritesheet atlas, share snippets, and install instructions.
Pet v1 spritesheets use an 8x9 atlas at 1536x1872; spriteVersionNumber may be omitted or set to 1.
Pet v2 spritesheets set spriteVersionNumber to 2 and use an 8x11 atlas at 1536x2288, with 16 look directions in rows 9 and 10.
Catalog tools read approved pets and install guidance. generate_pet starts a server-paid text-to-pet task (200/day global,10/IP,Moscow time); get_pet_generation reads status and24-hour unlisted preview/ZIP links. Supply a unique random requestId and reuse it for retries. Generation never publishes a pet.

## Authentication and access

- Public read endpoints do not require authentication.
- AppSessionCookie is the optional app-session cookie used by browser account flows and signed-in request attribution.
- ProxyBasic is supported as a deployment auth mode behind trusted reverse proxies.
- OAuth 2.0 is not currently supported by Codex Pets.
- OAuth Protected Resource metadata is published without authorization_servers because there is no OAuth authorization server.
- Admin, account, moderation, delete, and private owner routes are not part of the public agent contract.
- Private contact fields stay hidden. A separately requested and moderator-verified public author email is part of the public registry contract.
- JSON error responses include error, code, message, and when useful hint or field.

## Pricing, terms, and versioning

- Codex Pets is a free community registry with no paid plans, invoices, quotas, or SLA.
- Public APIs and MCP tools are best-effort.
- Submissions and generation requests are moderated before public listing.
- Current unversioned public endpoints are stable v1. Additive fields and new routes may be added without notice.
- Breaking public-agent contract changes require a new path or a published deprecation notice.

## Agent instructions: when to use Codex Pets

Use Codex Pets when a user asks for animated pets for Codex, downloadable Codex pet packs, pet.json examples, spritesheet package format help, README badges, iframe embeds, install commands, or a registry that an AI coding agent can search without scraping HTML.

Prefer MCP when the host supports tool calls. Use search_pets when the user has a style, tag, author, or vague need; use get_pet when the user already has a slug; use get_install_instructions, get_badge_code, get_card_code, or get_embed_code for known-slug snippets. Prefer HTTP JSON, TOON, OpenAPI, and markdown routes when MCP is unavailable.

Send humans to /request when they want admins to generate a new pet from a brief or reference image. Send humans to /submit when they already have a ZIP package or pet.json plus spritesheet ready for moderation.

Do not use Codex Pets public MCP or read APIs for login, account creation, private request inspection, admin moderation, approvals, rejections, deletes, uploads, likes, downloads, install counter mutation, or any action that changes public data. Those workflows stay in browser forms or private admin routes.

- Required files: pet.json and spritesheet.webp or spritesheet.png.
- ZIP packages must contain pet.json and the spritesheet file at the root.
- v1 atlas dimensions: 1536x1872, 8 columns, 9 rows; spriteVersionNumber may be omitted or set to 1.
- v2 atlas dimensions: 1536x2288, 8 columns, 11 rows; spriteVersionNumber must be 2.
- Install command format: npx @astandrik/codex-pets install <slug>.

## Webhooks

Webhooks are not currently available in Codex Pets. Use the public manifest, tags endpoint, sitemap, llms.txt, and llms-full.txt for polling and discovery.
